Meet the Trainer

I first began my fickle relationship with fitness in high school. I had just turned 16 and was no longer actively engaged in athletics, but I did not want to be unhealthy. I joined a gym (with the signed consent of my parents since I was still a minor) and began regularly attending a BootCamp class as well as a cycling class. Thus began my obsessive approach toward exercise.

During my college career, I went to the gym almost every day for a minimum of an hour. If I didn't make it sixty minutes or if something inhibited me from going to the gym, I beat myself up mentally. I told myself I was a loser and had to work twice as hard the next time. And I would. There were many times I would turn down hanging out with friends if it meant I would have to skip the gym.

While going to graduate school in England, I found myself spending less time in the gym. I had come to realize that I had developed an unhealthy relationship with the gym, and I thought the only solution was to stop going. Since I walked almost everywhere in Nottingham, England, I felt that would be sufficient. It wasn't.

When I moved back to the States in 2017, I started working toward a commission in the United States Air Force. I hired a personal trainer and worked twice a week for an hour in the gym doing weight-lifting. The other days of the week would include running at least three miles. When God shut the door to the military, I found my rollercoaster relationship with took another nosedive.

For years after that, my fitness experience was much like the tide of the ocean--sometimes it was way more apparent in my life than others. I went from one extreme to another and struggled to find a balance. I either ate super healthy and worked out regularly, or I ate a lot and questioned why my weight fluctuated as much as it did. No matter the scenario, I had an excuse for my choices and behavior.

In 2018, I decided to start making a change. I became a Certified Personal Trainer. In 2021, I became a Group Fitness Instructor. Throughout the years, I have continued my fitness education and found what works for me. I have learned what approach to fitness is sustainable and realistic for my lifestyle and my personal goals. I finally see where I have reclaimed a healthy relationship with my body and fitness.

Does that mean I don't ever struggle with body image or "off-weeks"? Of course not! I am just as human as the next person. I have, however, started being accountable for my decisions and making exercise and health a priority in my life. If that means I get up at 3:30 am to go to the gym down the road before my day begins, then that is what I will do. If that means I need to take a couple of days off because my personal schedule requires a temporary change, then that is what I will do.

This is the approach I bring to my personal training. I know what it feels like to want to make a change and then "fail" and feel like a failure. I have been on both ends of the exercise spectrum--obsession and avoidance. I know how difficult it can seem to develop a realistic routine and stick with it.

With Weather the Storm Fitness, I want to help equip women with the resources and relationships they need to face challenges head-on, embrace the struggle, and find the inner strength with Christ to persevere. It's about understanding that setbacks and shortcomings are part of our fitness journeys and that they don't define us as individuals. They shape us, and make us stronger, more resilient, and more determined.
